How to Discern God’s Timing

Understand the times. Discern the season. Know what to do.

One of the hardest parts of following God is not always knowing what to do—it is knowing when to do it. Something can be good and still not be right for this season. Sometimes we need to move, sometimes we need to wait, and sometimes the waiting season is where God prepares us for what is coming.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 NKJV says, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Discernment is not only recognizing what is right; it is also recognizing the season we are in and responding wisely.

The sons of Issachar give us a powerful biblical picture. During a critical transition in Israel, when men from the tribes were coming to David, 1 Chronicles 12:32 NKJV describes the sons of Issachar as those “who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do.” They understood both the time and the appropriate response. That is an important lesson for us: discernment is not simply recognizing that something is changing. We also need wisdom to know how to respond.

Not every season requires the same response. There is a time to move and a time to wait, a time to speak and a time to remain quiet, a time to build and a time to prepare. We should be careful not to make permanent decisions based on temporary emotions, pressure, fear, or impatience.

David understood this principle. He was anointed to become king while Saul was still on the throne. The promise was real, but its fulfillment was not immediate. David had opportunities to take Saul’s life, yet he refused to seize the throne through violence. He would not force the fulfillment of what God had promised.

Jesus also demonstrated an awareness of timing. In John 7:6 NKJV He said, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.” Jesus was not controlled by the pressure or expectations of other people. His actions remained aligned with the Father’s purpose.

How Do You Discern the Right Time?

Start with Scripture. God’s timing will never make disobedience right. If something clearly contradicts His Word, you do not need another sign to justify it.

Pray for wisdom. James 1:5 tells us that if anyone lacks wisdom, we should ask God. Instead of only praying, “Lord, give me what I want,” also ask, “Is this wise? Is this the right season? Am I prepared? What should I be doing now?”

Examine your motives. Sometimes we move too quickly because we are afraid of losing an opportunity, tired of waiting, lonely, frustrated, or desperate for change. Urgency is not always divine direction, and fear of missing out should never become our spiritual compass.

But waiting can also become an excuse for fear. Sometimes we keep asking for another confirmation when Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, preparation, and circumstances are already pointing toward a responsible next step. At that point, what we may need is courage.

Habakkuk 2:3 NKJV says, “Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” Waiting does not necessarily mean inactivity. David developed leadership before sitting on the throne. Joseph learned responsibility long before entering Pharaoh’s palace. Moses spent years in Midian before returning to Egypt. Preparation can be part of the process.

Do not force a door simply because you are tired of waiting, but do not allow fear to keep you standing still when it is time to move. Ask God for wisdom like the principle we see in Issachar: to understand the times and know the appropriate response.

Psalm 27:14 NKJV says, “Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!”

God’s timing may not match our preferred timetable, but His wisdom can be trusted. Stay in His Word, pray, seek wise counsel, prepare faithfully, and examine your motives. Do not let impatience push you ahead or fear hold you back.

Understand the times. Discern the season. Know what to do.

Prayer

Father, give me wisdom to understand the times and discern the season I am in. Keep me from running ahead because of impatience, fear, loneliness, or pressure, and keep fear from preventing me from taking the right step. Help me remain grounded in Your Word, seek wisdom, prepare faithfully, wait patiently, and move courageously when the time is right. In Jesus’ name, amen.
